This cotton huipil is gorgeous, large and heavy. It is hand embroidered on both sides.
San Mateo Ixtatan is located in the highlands of Huehuetenango whre the weather is very cold. So this is the reason why Huipiles are so heavy; to maintain body warmth.
This piece displays stars, flowers, birds and geometric designs as main patterns. The round neckline is trimmed and decorated with different satin fabrics and lace decoration.
Three pieces of loom-woven material that are sewn together along their length, folded in half lengthwise, and folded so that the ends can also be joined together to form a tube, but leaving room for the armholes .

The effect of the embroidery being sewn through both layers of fabric is amazing.
The satin stitch design in bright acrylic colors radiates from the curved line of the neck to a few centimeters from the sides, and is also used to decorate the armholes.

The embroidery has three six-pointed stars as a motif. The outline of the stars repeats itself over and over, radiating out from the center like a stone dropped into a still pond. Beneath this semicircle of vibrant colors, on what remains of the ground white material, are traditional embroidery of flowers and birds.
